W Trek in Torres del Paine National Park

The W-trek is one of the most iconic trekking routes in the world, passing through forests, over mountains, past glaciers and blue green waters. The trek, named for the "W" shaped path you'll take, visits some of the spectacular highlights of Patagonia's Torres del Paine national park, to include the Mirador Towers, the French Valley, and the Grey Glacier that is part of the South Patagonian Ice Field.  It is a total of approximately 50 miles of hiking over the course of 5 days, however in our case we will take a 6th day to complete the trek with a restful shabbos in middle.

Meet in Puerto Nateles on Wednesday to secure any necessary gear and prepare for the trek ahead. We will get our packs loaded and ready before getting a good night's sleep ahead of our 6 days on the trail.

We head out bright and early to get a morning bus to Torres del Paine National Park. After driving for 2 hours we will enter the park and continue until we reach our catamaran on which we'll sail over Lake Pehoe towards the Paine Grande site. We'll store some of items at Paine Grande and then set off on our first leg of the hike towards glacier Grey. At 11.6 km, this is just a short jaunt to get us used to the trail! We sleep in Refugio Grey overnight.

We will want to get a bright and early start so that we can make the extra hike to the spectacular Grey glacier lookout and over the suspension bridges. Then we'll hike back towards Grey, and then all the way back to Paine Grande.  Today we hiked a total of 20 km, so we'll be good and tired and excited to enter into a restful and rejuvenating Shabbos at the Paine Grande refugio.

Shabbos in Patagonia!  There is not much we can do here other than relax while enjoying each others' company and the gorgeous scenery.  But boy will we need that rest....

Sunday is going to be the longest day of our trek, and through some of the W-trek's most scenic areas. We'll hike through the French Valley to the Mirador Brittanica where we will be surrounded by towering mountains, hanging glaciers and lush forests. Then we head to our home for the night in the Frances campsite. Today we hike more than 22 km.

On our penultimate day on the trail, we hike along the shores of Lake Nordensjold, today for almost 15 km. We'll try to get in early to our Chileno campsite in anticipation of an early wakeup tomorrow....

Last day on the trail!  We will head out early before sunrise on the hardest section of the trail so that we can reach the Mirador Base Towers at sunrise.  Then we make our way back to Chileno, pick up our packs, and hike the final stretch to the Welcome Center and Laguna Amarga so that we can catch a shuttle back to Puerto Natales.  We hikes about 22 km again today. What a journey!

We will return any gear, celebrate our success, and then sleep nice and deep on our final night in Patagonia.

We did it! Time to pack up and get ready to leave Patagonia.  Depending on flight schedules, we may have time for a short day trip around the town before flying out to Santiago... and then home
